Control: The Back-Story

Back Story of the Poem – Control (Chemical in my brain)

There was a time when my husband would go to the office very early in the morning (5:30am). I would ordinarily wake up earlier to help him prepare, but when we didn’t have much preparations to do (for example, there’s stew and all we need to do is boil rice for his lunch at work), he’d tell me to sleep and he’d take care of it himself amidst getting ready for work. When he was done, he’d come in to say goodbye and kiss my forehead. For whatever reason, I was always conscious when this happens and would usually respond, then continue my sleep.

One of such days when he asked me to “sleep-on”, by the time I woke up, I woke up sobbing. It was more like when you wake up with a sound in your heart and you just start worshipping from your sleep, but this time, it wasn’t a song, I was crying softly. Then I heard “why are you crying?”, and I said “my husband did not kiss me on my forehead before going to work”. Yes, I am laughing at myself as well, as I write this now, but then, it was real, very real.

The Holy Spirit asked me questions about the situation and as I answered them, I was able to process my feelings at that time. But the most intriguing part of it was that, “my helper brought all things to my remembrance”, in other words, my husband actually kissed my forehead before leaving that morning, I just forgot, because I sleep off again.

After the therapy session with the Holy Spirit, we realised that the main issue was just my monthly visitor blowing things out of proportion. Yes, my hormones and emotions were high. Mind you, the therapy session from the sobbing to the reconciliation took less than 10mins. Why?

– I first realised that this wasn’t proper behaviour. The word of God tells me that I have joy, why did I wake up crying? Yours may not be crying, but you must be able place your emotions, actions and all, beside the word of God at all times, and assess if they align. To do this, you must know the word—study and meditate on the word.

– I listened to the Holy Spirit. Dear rich believer (yes, I call you rich because you are not alone), you have a helper in the person of the Holy Spirit, let Him help you. Create an environment that allows you to hear Him (notice that I didn’t say “an environment that allows Him to speak”, because He is always willing to speak, we are just sometimes “dull of hearing”).

‌- I obeyed: one thing is to listen and another is to obey. If you think you do not have self-control, you are sometimes ruled by your emotions or your hormones; you are easily angered, whatever the case, relax! Do not struggle to control yourself. All you need to do is obey. Self-control is the gradual continuous obedience to the word of God and the Holy Spirit. The more you obey, the more you control. The temptation will come—the feelings, the anger, the norm, etc. but you have to fight back with obedience.

‌- Lastly (please read this in an edo or delta accent): normally, normally, I’m an iron lady, I can’t loose-guard for man now 😄🤭🫣 (Lies! This lady has fallen).

Long story short, the world will tell you things like “body no be fire wood”, “it’s that time of the month, you are justified by your actions”, “men cheat”, “give them fire for fire”, “dey for who dey for you”, (please add the rest by yourself 😄), but you have to conquer it with God’s word at all times. What does God’s word say?:

-‌ “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” – Gal 5:22-24 NASB

‌- “All things are legitimate [permissible–and we are free to do anything we please], but not all things are helpful (expedient, profitable, and wholesome). All things are legitimate, but not all things are constructive [to character] and edifying [to spiritual life]” – 1 cor. 10:23 AMPC

‌- “This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you. [13] Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. [14] You are My friends if you do what I command you” – John 15:12-14

Will it be easy, No! Can you do it, yes! You are helped of God’s spirit.
